What is PayFast?
PayFast is a payments processing engine for South Africa that enables easy, secure and instant transfer of money between online buyers and sellers via, and to South African Banks only.
How do I pay using PayFast?
This allow sellers to accept payments from buyers in a variety of ways, ie: credit card payments (Visa and MasterCard), Instant EFT’s (bank transfers to any of SA’s four biggest banks that get instantly verified), and Ukash.
What is Ukash?
Ukash is one of the world’s largest voucher based payment systems. Buyers purchase a voucher at major retail outlets and redeem the vouchers against purchases from your site. This works for international buyers too: Ukash is available in over 50 countries.
How does it work?
With PayFast, buyers can make secure and instant online payments to sellers for goods and services. There’s no charge to buyers to use PayFast, but sellers are charged a small percentage of each successful transaction. The payments are kept in the seller’s PayFast account. When the seller requests a pay-out, the money is transferred into their bank account. You can accept payments through PayFast if you’re an individual, a registered business or a charity.
PayFast is committed to keeping you and your information secure. They have a multitude of checks in place to protect both buyers and sellers from fraudulent transactions.
- PayFast uses Extended Validation SSL with 256-bit encryption (this is the highest level of encryption currently available. Some of our major South African banks also use this form of encryption)
- 3D Secure is in place for all credit card transactions.
- All sensitive info is encrypted within PayFast’s own database.
- PayFast runs penetration testing on their system on a weekly basis to look for vulnerabilities. This procedure is only required once every three months, but PayFast runs it weekly.
- PayFast’s entire site, blog and help site are served off secure servers, making it harder to perpetrate phishing attacks.
PayFast also has an excellent monitoring system that does, among other things: GEO IP tracking, velocity testing, BIN/IIN validation and checks against online databases.
Instant EFT (Electronic fund transfers)
Instant EFT enables buyers to make payments with traditional internet banking with SA’s four biggest banks. The electronic funds transfer (EFT) gets verified instantly. No two day waiting period, no proof of payment required and no disclosing of financial information.
Credit Cards
Credit Cards are well known and a de facto online payment method the world round. We process local and international credit cards, with a variety of fraud protection mechanisms in place to protect you against charge backs.
3D Secure
3D Secure is an extra layer of security in using your credit card for online transactions. For online transactions over R1 000.oo you’ll be asked to enter your 3D Secure password (different from the PIN), which is called Verified by Visa and MasterCard SecureCode by the respective credit card companies.
You have to register for 3D Secure with your card issuing bank, and can be set up either as a password of your choice or a one-time-password that will be sent to you by email/SMS.
